Voices Against Violence
The Voices Against Violence service project is a call to action for young lawyers to raise awareness about and the prevent of domestic violence. We accomplish this goal through pro bono representation, fundraising and education. The YLS Voices Against Violence committee maintains a volunteer list for those young lawyers wishing to volunteer to represent victims in domestic violence proceedings on a pro bono basis. We work with the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program, the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association and the Jefferson County Family Court Domestic Violence Intake Center in matching volunteer lawyers with clients. In addition, the YLS hosts fundraisers and awareness events throughout the state to raise money for these worthwhile community organizations.
The Voices Against Violence program also seeks to educate KBA members and the community about the epidemic of domestic violence. We organize and host continuing legal education programs around the state and during the New Lawyers Program to instruct young lawyers on issues relating to Emergency Protection Orders and Domestic Violence Orders.
The Voices Against Violence Committee also hosts a roundtable discussion at the KBA Annual Convention, where attendees can discuss the impacts of domestic violence across the Commonwealth and legislative issues concerning the same. This year, the Committee is planning for a nationally renowned expert to share her knowledge on civil remedies available for sexual assault victims.
